On 28 September, the Beijing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese officially launched a three-day series of events celebrating the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Zhou Jingxiao, Secretary of the Party Group of the Beijing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, extended a warm welcome to the overseas Chinese in attendance and thanked them for their long-standing support for the Federation’s work. He expressed the hope that, while developing their own careers, overseas Chinese would actively contribute to the capital’s development in the new era. The Beijing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese will always uphold its founding principle of putting overseas Chinese first, striving to make the Federation a trustworthy home — one of unity, endeavour and warmth — for returned overseas Chinese, their families and overseas Chinese compatriots abroad.

Dr. Yang Cheng said he was deeply honoured to be invited to the National Day celebrations on behalf of his fellow Macao compatriots, noting that the successful implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” has not only brought long-term prosperity and stability to Macao, but also offered the world a governance model worthy of reference. Taking part in the celebrations gave him a still deeper appreciation of the motherland’s strength and its care for Macao.

He is keenly aware of his responsibility to promote exchanges and cooperation between Macao and the mainland and to advance Macao’s further development. He hopes to seize the opportunity offered by these events to strengthen ties with all sectors in the mainland, create more opportunities for Macao’s young talent to study and exchange in the mainland, and help them realise their potential on a broader stage. At the same time, he looks forward to sharing Macao’s advanced experience in certain fields with the mainland, achieving mutual benefit and jointly contributing to the prosperity and development of the motherland.

During the events, Dr. Yang Cheng, together with Vong Ka Lon — Honorary President of MFTEDA, President of the Macao Patriotic Education Youth Association and Member of the Macao Legislative Assembly — was invited to attend the report session by the Mayor of Beijing, and the two also jointly attended the reception hosted by the Beijing Municipal People’s Government.

Dr. Yang Cheng believes that such exchange activities are not only an honour but also the call of a mission. While listening to the Mayor’s report session, he deeply felt the tremendous achievements Beijing has made in urban development, technological innovation and social progress, and learned about its future development plans and goals. He said Macao can draw on Beijing’s experience in technological innovation and urban governance and, in combination with its own strengths, explore a new path suited to Macao’s development.

At the reception hosted by the Beijing Municipal People’s Government, Dr. Yang Cheng engaged in in-depth and pleasant exchanges with guests from various sectors. Those present held lively discussions on topics such as the nation’s development and regional cooperation. Dr. Yang actively shared Macao’s latest developments and experience in areas such as the regional economy and digital development, while listening attentively to the views and suggestions of guests from different regions.

During the exchanges, Dr. Yang paid particular attention to development trends in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and green energy. He believes Macao can look for entry points for cooperation with the mainland in these areas and jointly carry out research and implement projects.

After three days of events, Dr. Yang was filled with reflection and anticipation. He is well aware that these events provided him with a rare platform to gain a deeper understanding of the mainland’s development, while also creating more opportunities for exchanges and cooperation between Macao and the mainland.

He said he would bring back to Macao the experience and insights gained from these events, actively promote cooperation and development between Macao and the mainland in all fields, and contribute his share to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
